There is the tedious and stressful option of an Elimination Diet, which needs to be followed for 7-21 days, to allow allergens to clear from the body and symptoms to improve. Any food related symptoms should have improved after 21 days. There is then a re-challenge period where one food group at a time is re-challenged every three days, at least three servings of the food need to be eaten on the challenge day, at 2-3 separate meals, after the challenge day, return to the elimination diet for 2 days, and observe any symptoms. Sound easy? Not for most people. It takes a large commitment and a lot of organisation. In my clinical experience, most people give it up before any real result can be determined.
There are other options which involve blood tests. The Alcat test is an option whereby your Naturopath completes a functional pathology request for a particular type of test (there are numerous options and all vary in cost according to how comprehensive the test is). This is performed at a blood collection location. Another convenient option is the Food Detective test which can be performed in clinic, by the Naturopath and requires a small blood sample and you get your results the same day! Full details are included in the article to follow.
